Gynecomastia is described as an enlargement of the man’s breast tissue resulting in swelling that gives the chest a more typically feminine aspect.

In the vast majority of cases, gynecomastia is not a serious problem, but it may be psychologically difficult to cope with. As well as feeling self-conscious and causing potential embarrassment, some men and boys may also experience some pain and discomfort in their breasts.

Contrary to popular belief, Gynecomastia is not just caused by extra fat from being overweight. It is caused by extra breast tissue deposits, usually as the result of health issues such as a hormone imbalance, or the decrease in the production of testosterone in older men. Other factors such as drug or alcohol abuse, thyroid related problems or certain medications can also lead to an increased swelling in the breast tissue.

If you are self conscious about the size of your breast area, and are considering undergoing a surgical reduction, here are some key things to know about the procedure:

  1. Choose the right surgeon
  2. As with any elective surgical procedure, it is important to choose the right surgeon. You will want a surgeon who you trust and feel confident about their ability, as well as someone who is Board Certified and experienced in this area.

Male breast reduction is a straightforward procedure, but a highly experienced surgeon will be able to offer you the very best results possible.

When choosing a surgeon, ask to see before and after pictures of other successful procedures, and ensure that your surgeon is Board Certified in Cosmetic Surgery, including the specialist areas of liposuction and chest contouring.

Finally, go with your gut. If you have a good feeling about a potential surgeon and you feel that he understands your concerns and your goals, then this goes a long way to achieving the best results possible.

  3. Chose your procedure
  4. Male Breast Reduction With Liposuction

Of course, your surgeon will run through the options available to you at your initial consultation. Between the two of you, you may decide that liposuction is the best option for you.

Advances in liposuction technology, have resulted in a wider selection of less invasive techniques being available. A skilled surgeon with specific experience of male chest reduction will be able to remove excess fat under local anesthesia, via a small incision on each side of the chest. He will also be able to sculpt a new chest contour that looks natural to your body.

Male Breast Reduction with Tissue Excision

If you are suffering from a more severe case of gynecomastia, you may benefit from surgical tissue excision. Tissue excision allows a cosmetic surgeon to remove a greater amount of glandular tissue and/or skin that cannot be successfully treated with liposuction alone. Breast tissue excision is also performed as an outpatient procedure and patients should be able to return to work with 1 week of surgery.

  5. How Soon Will You Notice Results?
  6. After gynecomastia surgery, you should notice an immediate improvement in the shape and appearance of your chest. You may feel a little sore for a few days but this will fade. You can take a pain reliever like Tylenol and you may be asked to wear a compression garment following surgery.
