Autologous Fat GraftAutologous fat grafting or fat transfer uses a patients own fat to transfer to almost any body area to enhance or restore volume. Fat grafting can be used to correct post traumatic deformities such as depressed scars or areas of fat loss due to prior trauma. Since the fat comes from your own body and only small amounts are usually harvested, it is a procedure that can be performed several times if needed. Fat transfer to the face is now considered a state of the art procedure designed to recontour the face and provide definition to checks, chin, lips and lower eyes. It may also be used in a similar fashion as the dermal fillers.CANDIDATE FOR AUTOLOGOUS FAT GRAFTING PROCEDUREAlmost everyone has enough fat for small grafts but should larger grafting be required you must have sufficient donor fat. Candidates should be healthy nonsmokers who have a positive outlook and realistic goals in mind. At the time of your consultation, your goals, the procedure, routine postoperative healing, will be explained in detail and all of your questions answered. Your medical history will be reviewed to ensure you are a healthy candidate for surgery.THE AUTOLOGOUS FAT GRAFTING PROCEDUREA very small ¼ inch incision is made in the thigh or belly button area where lidocaine is injected to numb the area. A small cannula is used to remove the fat cells which are then spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the cells. A very small needle is used to inject the fat into the desired area. The fat graft procedure may also be done at the same time you are having other procedures in the operating room or in our office under local anesthesia with light oral sedation. Small fat graft procedures may take as little as 30 minutes.AFTER SURGERYYou may have swelling, bruising and soreness for several days following the procedure. Sutures, if used, are dissolvable. You are able to return to normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for the autologous fat grafting procedure is to schedule a consultation. You will learn what are reasonable expectations for the goals you wish to achieve. |
