Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)Ears that stand out or protrude can detract from facial appearance and is often a social concern for both children and adults. Children with protruding or deformed ears may suffer ridicule resulting in lack of self-confidence. The goal of the otoplasty (ear surgery) procedure is to modify the skin and cartilage thus improving the shape, position, or proportion of the ear. It is often difficult to achieve perfect symmetry of both ears at the time of surgery. Children usually undergo this procedure at 5-7 years of age, as adults may undergo the procedure at any time. Correction of the deformities can have profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem.

Before Otoplasty CANDIDATE FOR OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY) PROCEDUREChildren who are good candidates are healthy, do not have untreated chronic ear infections and can cooperate and follow instructions well.Adults who are good candidates are healthy non-smokers with a positive outlook. At the time of your consultation, your goals, the procedure, and the routine postoperative healing process will be discussed in detail and all of your questions will be answered. Your medical history will be reviewed to ensure you are a healthy candidate for surgery. THE OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY) PROCEDUREEach otoplasty (ear surgery) procedure is individualized due to the individual anatomy of the ear thus taking great care not to distort other structures and to avoid an unnatural “pinned back” appearance. The incisions are made behind the ear, which are well hidden in the natural creases of the ear, using techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold and to reduce enlarged cartilage thus creating an ear as normal in structure and balanced in proportion to other facial features. The otoplasty (ear surgery) procedure is done on an outpatient basis, taking 2 hours to perform and is done under general anesthesia. A bulky dressing is applied after surgery and is worn for one week. It is essential that the bandage remain intact and is not removed for any reason.AFTER SURGERYThe bulky dressing will be removed one week following surgery and a soft headband is applied and should be worn at night for 4 weeks to prevent ear folding, trauma, and to support the new position of the ear during the initial healing, especially while sleeping. The ears may be swollen, bruised, and sore for several weeks following surgery. Any remaining swelling may take several months to subside. The scars will slowly refine and fade over time. Children should refrain from rough aggressive play until healing is complete, but may return to school in one week. Adults may return to work one week following surgery. The outcome of surgery is present almost immediately, thus creating a positive change in self-esteem and framing a confident smile. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for the otoplasty (ear surgery) procedure is to schedule a consultation. You will learn what are reasonable expectations for the goals you wish to achieve. |
