Breast reduction is a procedure that often creates some of our happiest and most gratified patients. Some women have breasts that are uncomfortably large and the diameter of the pigmented areola has become enlarged due to pregnancy. The discomfort from large heavy breasts may be physical, emotional or both. Large breasts can be the cause of multiple medical problems including neck, back and shoulder pain, skin irritation under your breasts, breathing problems and even skeletal deformities. Large breasts can limit a woman’s physical activities including involvement in sports due to your large breasts, pain and discomfort. Even when wearing two sports bras, many women just cannot run or jog due to pain.

INSURANCE APPROVAL FOR BREAST REDUCTION

Insurance may often cover breast reduction surgery if it is medically indicated. The insurance companies set guidelines that must be met prior to having surgery. A letter of pre-determination with photographs is sent to your insurance carrier for medical review. It often takes 4 to 6 weeks to receive a response.

CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE

The best candidates are healthy women who are non-smokers and who have a positive outlook with realistic goals in mind, who simply need to have the size and volume of their breasts reduced to improve physical symptoms or for cosmetic and/or emotional improvement. Breast reduction surgery may interfere with your future ability to breast feed. Women with other health problems are at a higher risk to having post surgical complications. It is important to have realistic expectations about the results of the breast reduction procedure, as is the case with any surgical procedure. At the time of your consultation, your goals, the procedure and the routine post operative healing process will be explained in detail and all of your questions answered. Your medical history will be reviewed to ensure you are a healthy candidate for surgery.

THE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE

There are several techniques used for breast reduction surgery. The technique used depends on the patient’s needs and goals. The most common procedure leaves an anchor shaped incision that circles the areola and then extends straight down and follows the underside of the breast just above the breast fold. Excess skin and glandular tissue is then removed and the nipple and areola are repositioned. The diameter of the pigmented areola which has become enlarged with pregnancy is reduced to match the size of your reduced breasts. Ultimately the best shaped breast is what Dr. Lynam tries to achieve for his patients. The breast reduction procedure is done on an outpatient basis taking 3- 4 hours to perform and is done under general anesthesia. There are a small percentage of patients that are extremely large breasted requiring a large amount of breast tissue to be removed and a free nipple graft performed. These procedures are performed in a hospital setting requiring you to stay in the hospital over night. There is a drain tube placed per side and is used to remove any amount of fluid collection for 5-7 days following surgery.

AFTER SURGERY

Drain tubes are removed in the office 5-7 days following your surgery. Your breasts may be swollen, bruised and sore for several weeks. Scars created to perform the breast reduction are permanent and fade with time. The initial breast shape is high and full but over a six month period of time following surgery, the breasts drop to form a more natural shape. What is very important to understand is that the effect of gravity will continue working on your new breasts and wearing a good support bra to prevent re-stretching of skin is necessary. Following surgery you will wear a soft sports bra for 4-6 weeks to support and shape your new breasts. You may then be fitted for new bras and wear an underwire style bra if desired. Vigorous exercise routines may resume 4-6 weeks following your procedure. Most patients return to work in 2 weeks
