Thigh Lift (Lower Extremity Contouring)Thigh lift and lower extremity contouring procedures are performed for a variety of reasons. Oftentimes, thigh lift and lower extremity contouring procedures are performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight from diet and exercise, or having had weight loss surgery. When a person loses a lot of weight, sometimes the skin can not adequately shrink and will hang and droop. No amount of exercise or dieting will make all of the extra skin go away. Surgery is required to improve the appearance of your thighs. In a thigh lift, the excess skin and other tissue is removed for a firmer, more youthful contour.CANDIDATE FOR THIGH LIFT OR LOWER EXTREMITY CONTOURING PROCEDUREThe best candidates are healthy, non-smokers who have a positive outlook with realistic goals. If you have achieved a stable weight and have a significant amount of excess skin over your thighs, you may be an appropriate candidate for a thigh lift and lower extremity contouring procedure. If weight loss is not the reason for your thigh lift, you may be ready for surgery at anytime. If you are planning a significant weight loss or a future pregnancy it may be best to postpone your procedure. At the time of your consultation your goals, the procedures and the routine post operative healing process will be explained in detail and all of your questions answered. Your medical history will be reviewed to ensure you are a healthy candidate for surgery.THIGH LIFT PROCEDUREIn most thigh lift procedures an incision is made down under the inner thigh and/or hidden groin creases. An outer thigh lift requires incisions be made from the groin around to the back to just above the buttock crease. Excess skin and fat is removed to improve contour. Thigh lift procedure is done on an outpatient basis, but on occasion you may need to stay overnight in a hospital or some patients may opt to have a nurse go home with them for 24 hours to assist with postoperative care. The thigh lift procedure takes between 2-4 hours to perform, depending in part on how much skin and tissue is to be removed, and is done under general anesthesia. Incisions are carefully closed. There is usually one drain tube per leg placed to remove any amount of fluid collection for the first week after surgery.AFTER THIGH LIFT OR LOWER EXTREMITY CONTOURING SURGERYDrain tubes are removed one week following surgery. Your thighs may be swollen, bruised and sore for several weeks. Scars created to perform the thigh lift are often not visible when you wear regular shaped underwear or bathing suits. The scars are permanent and fade with time. After drain removal you will be placed in a light compression garment that is to be worn several hours per day to help shape and support the skin for one month following surgery. Vigorous exercise routines may resume 6-8 weeks after surgery. You may return to work in 2 weeks. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for the thigh lift or lower extremity contouring procedure is to schedule a consultation. You will discuss reasonable expectations for the goals you wish to achieve. |
