The technique used depends on the patient’s physical exam. The first is liposuction alone. This technique is used if the tissue being removed is primarily fat. Several small ¼ inch incisions are placed around the edge of the areola. A small cannula is used to move through the layers beneath the skin, breaking up the fatty tissue and suctioning it out. The second technique is excision and liposuction. This technique is used if you have large amounts of excess fat and glandular tissue. A short incision is placed at the bottom edge of the areola to excise the glandular tissue and several small ¼ inch incisions are placed on the chest to allow for suctioning of the excess fat to reshape the breast. The third technique is excision of glandular tissue and skin similar to traditional breast reduction surgery. The Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) procedure is done on an outpatient basis, taking two hours to perform and is done under general anesthesia. There may be one drain tube per side used to remove any small amount of fluid collection for the first few days following surgery. AFTER MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNECOMASTIA) SURGERYDrain tubes, if used, are removed 5-7 days following Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) surgery. Your breast may be swollen, bruised and sore for a few weeks. Approximately 80% of the swelling is gone within one month and the rest fades away over a 6 month period of time. Scars created to perform the Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) procedure are permanent but fade with time. You will be placed in a compression vest at the time of your surgery which should be worn 23 hours per day for the first week following surgery. Beginning week 2, a lighter compression garment is to be worn 12 hours per day for the next month. The breast shape develops overtime as the swelling goes down and the skin shrinks. Occasionally, some patients may need additional surgery to remove excess skin if the skin does not shrink adequately following surgery. Vigorous exercise routines may resume 4-6 weeks following your surgery. Most patients return to work in 1 week. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for a Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) procedure is to schedule a consultation.
